John Q is a new artist collective whose name references “John Q. Public.” The “public” is left understood, though the work is considered a kind of public scholarship, and the “Q” is left hanging to reference the group’s interest in queer history and politics. The collective consists of Wesley Chenault, Andy Ditzler and Joey Orr.

Our first series of public interventions, Memory Flash, took place on Saturday, April 3, 2010. The series was progressive and moved through four interventions up Ponce de Leon Avenue to the ballparks at Piedmont Park and finally to Ansley Square. Click the MEMORY FLASH tab for more information and for the link to our comprehensive materials on Southern Spaces. Memory Flash was made possible by Flux Projects and is sponsored in part by grants from the Emory College Center for Creativity & Arts, the Lloyd E. Russell Foundation and the LUBO Fund.

Opening Thursday, May 27, 7-10PM at Eyedrum, is the Mondo Art Show, City Stories. This is part of the MondoHomo festival. John Q's piece, MondoPotato: Learning Through Play, appropriates the Mr. Potato Head toy adding invented and ambiguous parts to a game in which imagination is your only limitation.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR ATLANTA: an essay on queer migration by John Q

“[an] ambitious work…promises to be an unusual combination of cinema, painting, the written word, and performance.” -CREATIVE LOAFING ANNOUNCEMENT

“This is huge for Atlanta! Combining contemporary artistic platforms and historically-imbued venues is not only contextually compelling, but also will hopefully forge a path for more challenging public works in our city.” -BURNAWAY PREVIEW

The Atlanta Campaign was a Civil War military strategy that moved Union troops through the state and into the city. The Campaign for Atlanta is a performative essay about queer migration into urban areas.

Crawford Barton, an artist who photo-documented San Francisco’s Castro district through decades of immense social and political change, was a Georgia native from the rural town of Resaca. The Campaign for Atlanta features Barton’s exhilarating Super-8 movies of 1970s San Francisco, Resaca, and Atlanta, archived and unseen for decades.
